LONDON (CNI)--German commodity chemicals and plastics producer Lanxess announced Thursday that it has appointed Eckhard Wenderoth as head of its paper business unit.

He was previously president and chief executive of Lanxess KK in Tokyo and the company’s country representative for Japan.

Wenderoth, who has almost 35 years’ experience working for Lanxess's former parent company Bayer, primarily in its paper group, will take over from Andreas Scheurell. Scheurell has been running the paper business unit from the US since June 2004.

The future ownership of Lanxess's paper business is the topic of much media speculation. In April Lanxess announced that it had appointed investment bank UBS to assist in “reviewing the option of strategic partnerships for its paper business unit” in light of the ongoing consolidation in the sector.

Hiroaki Ito, presently director for butyl rubber at Lanxess in Japan, has been appointed interim chief executive and country head for Lanxess in the country.
