SINGAPORE (CNI)--Ticona, the engineering polymers business of German chemicals group Celanese, will invest in a GUR ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE) plant in the Asia Pacific region which will be operational by end-2007, CNI learnt on Wednesday.

Ticona announced this investment at Chinaplas 2005, an annual plastics and rubber exhibition which is currently being held at Guangzhou in China.

The company said it was in the advanced stage of selecting a site for the project, which would have a capacity of 20,000 tonne/year. Preliminary engineering work has been completed and plans for final engineering and construction are underway.

The new plant will increase Ticona’s total GUR UHMW-PE capacity to 90,000 tonne/year. The company's existing facilities are located at Bishop, Texas and Oberhausen, Germany.

David Postolowski, global GUR business director said: “The Asian investment will meet growing demand for GUR UHMW-PE and further extend our manufacturing capabilities for an expanded product range. It also demonstrates our long-term commitment to this important growth region.”

Chinaplas starts on Tuesday and ends Friday.
