LONDON (CNI)--Ticona is to increase thermoplastic copolyester elastomer (TPE) capacity by 50% at its Shelby plant in North Carolina, it said Monday.

The additional Riteflex TPE capacity will be brought onstream "in the next few weeks", a spokesman for the Kelsterbach, Germany-headquartered company said.

He declined to disclose details of Ticona's current TPE capacity at Shelby or quantify the investment involved in the expansion.

Ticona, the engineering plastics business of Celanese, said the capacity increase included the introduction of a new Riteflex 400 series, which it claimed offered higher melt temperatures and unique soft-touch grades. However, all Riteflex grades will be covered by the expansion.

The additional capacity is being introduced to meet rapidly rising demand, particularly from the automotive, medical equipment and consumer goods sectors, said Ticona.
