NEW YORK (CNI)--UK-based food and industrial ingredients producer Tate & Lyle said on Friday it will begin construction later this year on expansions at two US plants.

It plans to expand a Loudon, Tennessee plant for $75m (Euro62m) by October 2007 and its Sagamore facility in Lafayette, Indiana for $100m (Euro82m) by January 2007.

Tate & Lyle will increase production of value-added products at the Loudon facility using a proprietary technology, which according to the company, will significantly lower operating costs.

The expansion will also increase ethanol capacity by 37 million gal/year as well as supply substrate for the joint venture, DuPont Tate & Lyle BioProducts LLC, which is building a bio-based 1,3 propanediol (PDO) plant adjacent to the facility. The expansion will not include an increase in high fructose corn syrup capacity.

At the Sagamore plant, Tate & Lyle plans to increase capacity for food ingredient products. The plant is Tate & Lyle’s primary US production site for modified food starches that are used in a wide array of dairy, beverage, baking, snack and dressings.
