WASHINGTON (ICIS news)--There has been no improvement in the recovery of US offshore oil and gas production in the Gulf of Mexico since yesterday, the US Minerals Management Service (MMS) said on Tuesday.

The MMS released figures today showing that the amount of natural gas production still shut-in since Saturday’s landfall by Hurricane Rita remains at 78%, and oil production in the Gulf region remains completely off-line with a 100% shut-in rate, according to data provided by producers.

In fact, today’s MMS figures on gas shut-ins show a very marginal increase at 78.56% compared with the shut-in figure of 78.43% reported yesterday.

MMS officials had said earlier that they did not expect substantial improvements in Gulf production figures until midweek at the earliest because it would take time for crews to get back to their platforms and rigs, make repairs if needed and resume production.

Full recovery of Gulf gas production is crucial for restoration of chemical plants along the Texas and Louisiana coasts that were shut down as a precaution against hurricane storm damage and power loss.
