SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Siam Mitsui PTA has started commercial production at its third purified terephthalic acid (PTA) line at Mab Ta Phut, Thailand, joint-venture partner Mitsui Chemicals said on Monday.
"Siam-Mitsui completed the construction work in mid-August and has been running test operations from the beginning of September," said the company in a statement. Construction on the 500,000 tonne/year line had begun in March 2004.
The additional line was built to meet strong Asian demand growth for PTA, which is used as raw material in the production of polyester fibre and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles, said Mitsui. PTA demand in Asia is expected to increase at 7% per year, added the company.
Mitsui said the line would bring Siam-Mitsui’s total PTA capacity to 1.4m tonne/year, which Mitsui claims is the largest production volume of any producer in Asean.
Siam-Mitsui is a joint venture between Mitsui and Thailand's Siam Cement. Each of its two other lines has a capacity of 470,000 tonne/year of PTA.
