The global market for biodegradable polymers will expand by 75% to 91 000 tonne/year by 2010, up from 52 000 tonne now, according to a report. Technology advances, lower pricing, new products and markets for biodegradable polymers will help fuel growth. But the North American biodegradable polymer market has not progressed as rapidly as those in Europe and Japan.

Packaging, including loose-fill packaging, comprised nearly 47% of the polymers market in 2005, says the report. But compost packaging will overtake this, representing nearly 50% of the market by 2010. Other products – medical/hygiene, agricultural and paper coatings – play a smaller role, representing 11% of the total applications in 2005.
