LONZA’S POLYMER intermediates division has revealed plans to boost production capacity for malic acid, an alpha-hydroxy organic acid, at its facility in Scanzorosciate, Italy.
Capacity will be taken from 8000 tonne/year to 12 000 tonne/year, with the work scheduled for completion at the end of 2006.
The expansion is Lonza’s response to the increasing worldwide demand for malic acid, which is primarily used in the food and feed sectors.
Lonza is a leading producer of maleic anhydride (MA), the basic material for the production of malic acid. It operates MA capacity in Ravenna, Italy.
