LONDON (ICIS news)--Basell has shut down its polyethylene (PE) plant at Munchmunster in Germany following an explosion at the site on Saturday (10 December), a source close to the company said on Monday.
Preliminary information indicated that a fire had started in a building belonging to engineering firm ThyssenKrypp which is located close to chemicals plants at the site. No ThyssenKrypp officials were available for comment.
One fireman lost his life after the blast at the 120,000 tonne/year unit while three workers were treated for burns and other injuries, according to media reports.
The source said the plant was likely to be shut for some time. Basell officials were not available for comment.
