Chandra Asri restarts cracker after blackout

SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Chandra Asri, Indonesia’s sole cracker operator, restarted its ethylene plant on Monday afternoon after an unexpected outage on Friday shut down the unit, said company sources.

However the company's two polyethylene (PE) plants, which have a total capacity of 300,000 tonne/year, are still down, added one source. Both the cracker and the polymer plants are in Merak, West Java.

“We are waiting for on-spec ethylene before restarting the PE units," he said.

The cracker, which can also produce 520,000 tonne/year of ethylene and 260,000 tonne/year of propylene, and the PE units were shut after a power generator broke down, said the source. Power supply resumed on Sunday, he added.

 The company could restart the 200,000 tonne/year high-density PE/linear low-density PE (hdPE/lldPE) unit and 100,000 tonne/year hdPE unit on Tuesday, he added.
