Borouge awards contracts at Ruwais expansion

SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Borouge, the 40:60 joint venture between Borealis and the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc), has awarded four contracts related to the expansion of its Ruwais petrochemical complex, the company said Friday.

The work for the front-end engineering design for an olefins conversion unit was to awarded to ABB Lummus Global, and is expected to take approximately 32 weeks. When completed, the unit will have a capacity of 752,000 tonne/year.

The front-end engineering design for the polyolefins unit will be done by Fluor Mideast, and is expected to take 40 weeks.

MWH was awarded a mandate to carry out a health, safety and environment impact assessment, while Maersk Logistics was selected as a supply chain consultant.

The Borouge 2 expansion will see capacity at the Ruwais plant increase to 2m tonne/year of enahnced polyolefins, from 600,000 tonne/year. The increased capacity will comprise a 540,000 tonne/year enhanced polyethylene (PE) unit and two 400,000 tonne/year polypropylene (PP) units.

The expansion will be located next to Borouge's existing facility in Ruwais, Abu Dhabi, and is expected to be completed in 2010.
