BRUSSELS (ICIS news)--The European Union’s directorate general for agriculture is dedicating a new unit to biofuels, biomass, forestry and climate change, European Commissioner for Agriculture Mariann Fischer Boel told the European Parliament’s agriculture committee on Tuesday.
“Biofuels is one of the policy areas where we should grasp the opportunity and create consensus on the direction we have to take. I want to work on this and see biofuels, and in a broader sense energy produced from biomass, as an important new policy area for the coming years,” she said, introducing the new unit.
She also said a report will be released in June on energy crops, and that though no final decisions had been taken, one of the proposals is to make the energy crop scheme applicable in the eight new member states that are already applying the single farm payment.
“In the new Rural Development policy various support measures are designed to promote the development of bio-based energy production, and in particular investment support to processing activities,” she said.
Fischer Boel also said that agriculture as part of the EU’s wider energy policy could be included within the review of the EU’s Common Agriculture Policy in 2008 as a way to increase farmer participation.
