SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Formosa Plastics Corp (FPC), the Taiwanese major, is to build its first butanol plant by 2008, a company official said late on Monday.

The company plans to build the 230,000 tonne/year unit at Mailiao to provide feedstock for its butyl acrylate production, he added.

Propylene feedstock for the proposed butanol plant would be sourced from Formosa Petrochemical Corp (FPCC), he said.

FPC is also building plants to produce 160,000 tonne/year of crude acrylic acid (CAA), 60,000 tonne/year of glacial acrylic acid (GAA) and 230,000 tonne/year of acrylic esters.

All the acrylic acid will be used captively to produce methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, butyl acrylate (BA) and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, the official said. The acrylic acid and esters project will come on stream in 2008.

In China, the company also produces 160,000 tonne/year of CAA, 60,000 tonne/year of glacial acrylic acid, 30,000 tonne/year of methyl acrylate, 10,000 tonne/year of ethyl acrylate, 120,000 tonne/year of BA and 40,000 tonne/year 2-ethylhexanol (2EH) at Ningbo, Jiangsu Province.
