Siam Mitsui to shut No 3 PTA line in June for repairs

SINGAPORE (ICIS News)--Siam Mitsui will shut its No 3 purified terephthalic acid (PTA) line in Thailand for up to 15 days in June for repairs, a company source said on Wednesday.

The 500,000 tonne/year unit at Map Ta Phut, Rayong province, had mechanical problems in late April and was shut for a few days until early May, said the source.

He did not want to give the current operating rates, but other sources familiar with the company said it was around 80-90% of capacity.

"Therefore, there is a need to shut in June to rectify the fault," said one of the sources.

Siam Mitsui started up the line in late 2005, and had planned a week-long maintenance shutdown in May. This has now been replaced with the June turnaround.

The company is a joint venture between Japan’s Mitsui Chemicals and Thailand's Siam Cement. It operates two other PTA lines with a capacity of 470,000 tonne/year each.
