LONDON (ICIS news)--The Teesside, UK, biodiesel plant operated by Biofuels Corp achieved 58% of its production capacity in June, the company said on Friday.

The plant, Britain's largest biodiesel facility with a nameplate capacity of 250,000 tonnes/year, was officially opened on Friday by Prime Minister Tony Blair. Production commenced in February this year when it ran at 43% of capacity.

Biofuel Corp said the plant, which uses vegetable oils as feedstock, had the capacity to provide a quarter of the UK’s renewable transport fuel obligation 2010 target for diesel.

The company said all production has been shipped to customers in the UK and mainland Europe at prices in line with expectations.

“This event underscores the government’s recognition of the vital role biodiesel will play in reducing greenhouse gases and meeting Kyoto targets,” said Biofuels chairman Mike Buzzacott, a former leading executive of BP's chemicals business..

The introduction by the European Commission (EC) of a requirement for a 5.75% biofuels-blend in transport fuel by 2010 has sparked an upsurge in biofuel production across the continent, with dozens of companies announcing expansion projects.
