Invista to build nylon 6,6 plant in Shanghai

SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Invista, the integrated fibers and polymers producer, will build a nylon 6,6 yarn facility in Shanghai, China, the US-based major said on Monday.

Construction work on the 11,000 tonnes/year plant is expected to begin later in 2006, and commercial production planned for the first quarter of 2008.

The plant, which would use the same technology as Invista’s facilities in the UK and Canada, would produce super high tenacity yarns for use in various industrial textile applications.

The focus will be on the automotive industry, with the company planning to make the full range of materials for airbags in the plant.

The company claimed that it was the only one with such capability in Europe, North America and Asia. Shanghai was chosen for its proximity to major automotive supply chains and possible synergies with other Invista facilities in the area, it added.

“Our ability to supply global automotive manufacturers with essentially identical products in each region of the globe will help them localise their own supply chains more efficiently,” said Daniel J Stone, Invista’s vice-president performance fibres nylon in the statement.
