TAIPEI (ICIS news)--Taiwan's major petrochemical companies were unaffected by Typhoon Bilis, which hit the island's eastern coast late on Wednesday evening, company sources said today.

Most of the companies maintain their manufacturing facilities along the country's western coast away from the brunt of the typhoon. The plants mainly saw rain, but did not suffer any damage.

Southern Taiwan saw some rain, but operations at state-owned refining and petrochemical major Chinese Petroleum Corp’s (CPC) facilities were unaffected and no power outages were reported, according to company sources.

Similarly, sources at China American Petrochemical Co (Capco), Asia's largest producer of purified terephthalic acid (PTA), said that the company's Taichung and Kaohsiung plants in southern Taiwan were undisturbed by the typhoon.

Northern Taiwan was generally untouched by the storm as well. Sources from Formosa Plastics Corp (FPC) and Formosa Petrochemical Corp (FPCC) reported that despite the heavy rains, factories in Yunlin county, in northwestern Taiwan were not affected.

Rains from Bilis belted eastern Taiwan starting Wednesday night, with the typhoon making land fall late Thursday evening. The typhoon caused land slides, minimal flooding, and flight cancellations and delays, but did not cause any major damage.

The typhoon has moved towards China's southeastern coast, and is expected to make landfall in Fujian province in the late afternoon.
