United Biofuels plans Hungary bioethanol unit

PRAGUE (ICIS news)--Switzerland's United Biofuels Holding Europa will transform a former brick-making plant into a 100,000 hectolitres/year bioethanol plant by the end of 2007, the Hungarian city government of Mohacs said on Tuesday.

The Mohacs plant would require 300,000 tonnes/year of feedstock maize grown locally on 40,000 hectares, said a city government spokesman.

Plans for the capacity to be doubled by the end of the decade were subject to further discussion, said the spokesman.

The Swiss company is implementing the project through its local subsidiary, Mohacsi Biouzemanyag Termelo Kft, while the construction would come under Duna Development Kft, a firm jointly owned by the Hungarian and Austrian states already involved in the construction of seven other bioethanol plants in Hungary.

Mohacsi Biouzemanyag Termelo said it was not ready to disclose the project's cost and other details.
