HOUSTON (ICIS news)--Marathon and Valero noted progress on refinery expansions during their quarterly earnings reports on Tuesday.

Marathon said it was about 40% complete with the front-end engineering and design phase of a proposed 180,000 bbl/day expansion of its 245,000 bbl/day Garyville, Louisiana refinery.

The Houston-based company said the design phase should be complete in the fourth quarter, and the board of directors could sanction the project soon after.

Marathon also said that if the project is approved by its board, and the necessary permits are received by year-end, construction could begin around mid-2007, with completion by the end of 2009.

The expansion could make the Garyville refinery the fourth largest in the US, tied with Citgo’s 425,000 bbl/day Lake Charles, Louisiana refinery.

Another Texas refiner, San Antonio-based Valero, said its 75,000 bbl/day expansion of its 295,000 bbl/day Port Arthur, Texas refinery should be complete in November and begin operating in the fourth quarter.
