MOSCOW (ICIS news)--Kazakhstan plans to build a $4bn (€3.1bn) petrochemicals complex in the Karabatan area, some 40 kilometres from Atyrau, news agency Kazinform said on Tuesday.

The petrochemicals complex, which was originally due to be built in Atyrau, would have capacities to produce 800,000 tonnes/year of polyethylene (PE) and 400,000 tonnes/year of polypropylene (PP).

Construction was due to start in 2008, with planned completion by 2011.

The Karabatan area was chosen due to its proximity to the Tengiz and Kashagan oil and gas fields, which are expected to become major sources of feedstock supplies for the petchem complex, the agency quoted Viktor Suprun, deputy head of Atyrau administration, as saying.

The project is to be managed by Kazakhstan Petrochemical Industries (KPI), in which Kazakhstan's SAT&Company holds a 85% stake. The remaining 15% is controlled by AO Razvedka Dobycha KazMunaiGaz, a subsidiary of Kazakhstan's state-owned oil and gas company KazMunaiGaz (KMG).
