Maoming Petchem starts up new cracker

SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Maoming Petrochemical started up its new 640,000 tonnes/year cracker on Saturday, with the unit producing on-spec ethylene the day after, sources at the subsidiary of Chinese petrochemical major Sinopec said on Monday.
The cracker in Maoming, Guangdong province, is operating at a low rate as the company is carrying out technical work to stabilise production before ramping it up to full capacity, they added.
The company could restart its 160,000 tonnes/year polypropylene (PP) and 100,000 tonnes/year low-density polyethylene (ldPE) units in two to three days, one of the sources said. They were shut earlier to provide feedstock for new units.
Maoming Petrochemical had earlier started up its new units comprising a 300,000 tonnes/year high-density PE (hdPE) unit, a 300,000 tonnes/year PP unit and a 150,000 tonnes/year butadiene unit.
The company has also raised its benzene, toluene and mixed xylenes (BTX) capacity to 460,000 tonnes/year from 150,000 tonnes/year, and is building a 250,000tonnes/year ldPE unit that will start up in the first quarter of 2007.
