LONDON (ICIS news)--A contract for the construction of the Qafco V complex in Qatar is being finalised with Uhde of Germany, according to a source at Qatar Fertilizer Company (Qafco).

This follows a tender that was floated recently to attract bids from construction companies.

Although the company has not made an official announcement yet, the contract is expected to involve building one urea plant, with a capacity of 1.2m tonnes/year, and two ammonia units, with a total capacity of 1.4-1.5m tonnes/year.

This means the company will have a 700-800,000 tonnes surplus of ammonia for export, it said.

Construction is expected to start in 2007 and the complex is scheduled to be on-stream at the end of 2009. The cost of the project has not been disclosed, but it is understood it will be fully covered by Qafco.

Qafco currently has 2.7m tonnes/year of urea available for export, of which 1.8m tonnes/year is of granular urea and 900,000 tonnes/year is of prilled urea, and over 500,000 tonnes/year of ammonia.
