Kureha expects to finish repairs at PPS unit soon

TOKYO (ICIS news)--Kureha expects repair works at its fire-hit polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) unit at Iwaki to finish soon and hopes to get approval from the local fire station to restart within a few weeks, a spokesman for the Japanese chemicals and plastics producer said on Wednesday.

"The repair works are gradually being done, and I think it’ll be finished soon. But we’ll still have to wait for the fire department’s approval. After that we’ll have test runs of the plant," he said.

However, he said that the company didn’t know for certain when the plant would restart production. "We’ll be able to announce it within the next week or two," he added.

The 10,000 tonnes/year PPS plant in Fukushima prefecture has been shut since a fire broke out early on 7 September. The company said in a statement late last week that it had begun restoration works of the plant, which was expected to take about 20 days.
