SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--South Korean companies have produced and supplied more than 20m litres of biodiesel BD100 grade to oil companies from July to September, surpassing the total amount of 15m litres in the whole of 2005, the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy said on Wednesday.
It said in a statement the use of biodiesel as an alternative fuel has been successful and is progressing very smoothly since sales first started in the country in July this year.
South Korea is the first country in Asia to have started supplying biodiesel for consumer usage. Biodiesel is also the country’s first alternative fuel to have been introduced and supplied to all oil companies and petrol stations nationwide.
The past three months has seen a steady supply of BD5 grade biodiesel in the country. BD5 grade biodiesel is less than 5% of biodiesel mixed with normal petrol.
Within Korea, BD20 grade biodiesel is currently only supplied in limited amounts to companies with both vehicle service centre and petrol station, it added.
BD20 grade biodiesel is 20% of biodiesel mixed with normal petrol.
South Korea started using biodiesel in order to relax the country’s dependence on petrol, which was seen at 44.3% in 2005 and also in an effort to lessen the pollution caused by the use of petrol.
