Dow Chemical has begun construction of a new R&D centre in Shanghai to tap into Chinese and Asia-wide demand for innovative products.

Executives want to make scientific and technical innovation the core of the facility to drive products that have been marked as essential to the firm's growth.

The focus will be on building, construction, automotive, personal care and health products.

The 65,000m2 (700,000ft2) facility will be based in the Zhangjiang High-tech Park close to the city centre.

It will be completed by 2008 and will house up to 1,600 employees.
