NEW YORK (ICIS news)--GE Plastics on Tuesday said it plans to spend $280m (€218m) to expand its resin capacity in the US and Spain.

The company will invest about $250m to build a plant at Cartagena, Spain, and roughly $30m to expand capacity for its Ultem resin at its Mount Vernon, Indiana, facility.

Brian Herington, GE Plastics general manager for high performance polymers, said in a media briefing that the expansions were in response to customer demand.

The Cartagena plant is scheduled to open in 2008. The expansion will increase global capacity for GE’s Ultem resin by 30%. GE Plastics’ new Extem resins will also be produced there.

The Cartagena facility “will be able to manufacture both Ultem and Extem resins in the thousands of tonnes,” Herington said.

Meanwhile, the expansion at Mount Vernon will increase production there by 12% and cut manufacturing lead times to one week.

Both facilities were designed to be easily expanded to keep pace with the growing thermoplastics market, Herington said.
