SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Biodiesel SP and an associated company will invest an estimated ringgit (M$) 195m ($54m) in setting up two plants in Malaysia, a source close to the company said on Thursday.

The company’s Sungei Petani unit will have a capacity of 100,000 tonnes/year of biodiesel and is expected to start production by the third quarter of 2007, the source said.

He added that the associate company, Biodiesel LD’s, 13.8-acre (5.6 hectares) unit, situated in Sabah state’s Lahad Datu Palm Oil Industrial Cluster, will produce at a rate of 200,000 tonnes/year when completed by the end of next year.

Both units will use palm oil feedstock and produce methyl ester biodiesel using methanol as catalyst, the source said.

He cited countries in northeast Asia, Europe and the US as the companies’ target export markets.
