WASHINGTON (ICIS news)--A specialty chemicals and batch producers trade group said on Thursday it is offering management services to help US companies cope with compliance requirements under Europe's the newly approved registration, evaluation and authorisation of chemicals (Reach) programme.

The Synthetic Organic Chemical Manufacturers Association (Socma) said it is broadening its existing consortium management services to cover new rules imposed by the European Union’s Reach regulatory structure.

The trade group said its management tools, called ChemSortia, “will enable the [chemicals] industry to effectively pool resources to successfully address regulatory compliance, research and development planning for substitute chemicals [and] risk analysis and predictive modelling.”

Reach, given final approval earlier this week by the European Parliament, will require the testing of some 30,000 chemicals in commercial use in Europe and may force use of alternative or substitute compounds to those deemed a health risk.

US chemicals manufacturers have opposed the Reach programme and warn that it is unworkable and will stifle international trade.

The synthetic organic manufacturers’ group said it has in place international testing programmes and laboratory partnerships to assist companies in adapting to Reach.

A group spokesman said the trade association offers alternative analysis expertise for the development of substitutes, risk analysis for registration submissions and antitrust guidance for companies who pool their resources for Reach compliance.
