Czech govt welcomes EU biofuel subsidy extension

PRAGUE (ICIS news)--The Czech agriculture ministry on Wednesday welcomed news that the European Union (EU) has widened its biofuel subsidies programme to include new member states but added that local legislative delays might discourage potential applicants from bidding for the aid.

 

The EU said €45 ($59.49) per hectare is now available to farmers in the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Estonia, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Malta, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia who grow oilseed and sugar beet crops for biopetrol and biodiesel production.

 

The ministry said that, following the deadlocked June general election result, the Czech Republic was yet to establish a government backed by a parliamentary vote of confidence.

 

Therefore, it could not predict when the country’s biofuels production and sales legislation would be in place, it said.

 

The EU subsidies scheme was initiated in 2004.
