LONDON (ICIS news)--Industry and technical groups have called for significant increases in research funding in order to better understand the effects of nanotechnology on the environment, health and safety.

The comments were made at a public meeting held by US-based National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) at the start of 2007.
As well as highlighting the need for more funding, speakers from industry, academia, non-governmental organisations and consultants also stressed that there was a need for a central source of information as well as a ‘master plan’ for identifying and reducing potential risks.

Endorsing the work of the ongoing research on nanotechnology, Paul Ziegler, of PPG Industries and chair of the nanotechnology panel of the American Chemistry Council, said finance was a priority.
“There is an urgent need for increased federal funding for environment, health and safety (EHS) research,” he said.
