SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Sawit Biodiesel was building a unit and expects to start operations in June or July 2008, a spokesman from the Malaysian company said on Monday.
The plant, to be located in the port town of Kunak in eastern Sabah state, would have an initial capacity of 180,000 tonnes/year of biodiesel, he told ICIS news, adding that it may be doubled depending on market conditions.
The company would use refined, bleached and deodorised (RBD) palm olein as feedstock, which would be supplied by its plantations in the area.
Sawit owns the third largest oil palm plantation in Sabah, spanning an area of 70,000 hectares (700km2). It also has a 450,000 tonne/year palm oil refinery.
The spokesman said that buyers from Germany and Korea have expressed interest in the company’s produce.
He declined to disclose the cost of the project.
