NEW DELHI (ICIS news)--India’s Vedanta Alumina Limited (VAL) on Wednesday started soliciting expressions of interest (EOI) to supply it with 200,000 tonnes/year of caustic soda lye and 100,000 tonnes/year of calcined lime on a long term basis.

It did not specify the number of years that would constitute a long term contract.

VAL said it would require these quantities for its upcoming alumina refinery, which is scheduled to be commissioned shortly at Lanjigarh in Kalahandi district of Orissa State. Alumina is the intermediate for production of aluminium.

VAL, a subsidiary of UK-based metals major Vedanta Resources Plc (VRP), said the Indian rupees (Rs) 40bn ($905m) project was at an advanced stage of completion.

In October 2006, VRP was seeking EOIs for setting up a chlor-alkali project/joint venture (JV) to meet the caustic soda requirements for this refinery and its two operating aluminium companies, Bharat Aluminium Co Limited (Balco) and Madras Aluminium Company (Malco).

VRP also sought EOIs for setting up a greenfield calcined petroleum coke (CPC) project/JV to meet the group’s Indian alumina requirements.

A VAL official told ICIS news that received EOIs for greenfield projects were being followed up separately.

He said VAL would issue tender documents to companies that would be short-listed from EOI-submitting firms for caustic soda and calcined lime supplies.

The prospective suppliers are required to submit EOIs within 10 days from Wednesday.
