BUCHAREST (ICIS news)--One person was killed and another badly injured on Tuesday morning after an explosion at local fertilizer producer Azomures in Tirgu Mures, Romania, a company source said.

The explosion and subsequent fire occurred as a maintenance crew was working on the company's 300,000 tonne/year urea unit, which has been temporarily closed following the incident.

According to initial reports, the explosion was caused by a worker's mistake in operations.

It was not immediately clear how much damage was caused, but the blaze was extinguished by the local fire department.

Azomures is 55% owned by Turkey's Transworld Fertilizers Holding.

The company produces ammonium nitrate (AN), calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN), urea, complex nitrogen-phosphorous-potassium (NPK) fertilizers and melamine.
