HOUSTON (ICIS news)--Brazil’s January flexible-fuel automobile sales totalled 120,199 units, up 31% from the same month in 2006, the Brazilian Association of Vehicle Manufacturers (Anfavea) said on Wednesday.

However, sales of flexible-fuel cars last month dropped by 25% from 161,107 units in December, the association said.

Anfavea said flexible-fuel vehicles, which can run on either ethanol or gasoline, accounted for 82.7% of Brazil’s auto sales in January. This compares with 72.8% in the year-earlier month.

Production of flexible-fuel automobiles started in 2003 in Brazil. Sales of this type of vehicle jumped from 49,000 to 2.61m units between 2003 and 2006, according to Anfavea’s data.

Brazil is the world’s second largest producer of ethanol after the US, but the leading exporter of the biofuel.
