SHARM EL-SHEIK, EGYPT (ICIS news)--Egypt’s Helwan Fertilizer will start production at its new ammonia-urea project at the end of February or in early March, a company source said late on Wednesday.

The plant at Helwan will produce 1,200 tonnes/day (396,000 tonnes/year) of ammonia and 1,925 tonnes/day of urea.

The company has allocated 50% of its urea output for the domestic market, the source said.

Marketing rights for exports have been given to Trammo, Helm, Ameropa, Polyserve and Hagropota, with talks that Ameropa will take the largest stake.

However, most of the company output will probably be sold within Egypt for the first six months after the plant’s start-up, as the country is short of urea, sources close to the company said.
