LONDON (ICIS news)--Ineos Phenol will invest in a 400,000 tonne/year phenol plant in Zhangjiagang, Jiangsu Province in China scheduled for completion at the end of 2009, the company said on Wednesday.

The new facility, which will be solely owned by Ineos, will also produce 250,000 tonnes/year of acetone, the company added.

“It is expected that production from the Zhangjiagang facility will serve the growing market for phenol and acetone in China and will free capacity at the company’s European and US plants to meet growth in these regions,” Ineos said.

It did not reveal the investment cost of the new plant but said approval had been received from the National Development Reform Commission in China, the Ministry of Commerce and the Zhangjiagang Administration of Industry and Commerce.

With the completion of this new plant Ineos Phenol’s overall annual capacity will total over 2.2m tonnes of phenol and 1.2m tonnes of acetone.
