LONDON (ICIS news)--Swiss specialty chemicals maker Ciba on Wednesday said it would close its Camacari plant in Brazil as part of its strategy to concentrate plastic additive production in Asia.

The 4,300 tonne/year plant had been in operation since 1982 and employed 58 workers.

The company plans to use a larger plant in Singapore to supply plastic additive markets worldwide, said Ciba’s spokesperson Pat Rossman.

Rossman said Ciba was working to relocate its workforce from Camacari.

However, the Bahia chemical/oil workers union said the company planned to lay off all 58 workers.

Ciba decided to close the plant because production costs are cheaper in Asia, said union director Josemilson Santos. Workers held a vigil outside the plant last night to protest against the decision, the union said.

Based in Sao Paulo, Ciba’s Brazil operations comprise three business segments: plastic additives, coating effects and water and paper treatment.
