LONDON (ICIS news)--The European Chemical Industry Council (Cefic) on Monday backed the EU’s move towards a more coordinated, cohesive and integrated energy policy.

EU leaders on Friday set a firm target of cutting 20% of the EU’s greenhouse gas emissions by 2020 as part of its post-Kyoto arrangements.

“The European chemical industry can make an important contribution in meeting this ambitious challenge,” said Cefic in a statement.

“Its products and research capabilities can play a decisive role in the fight against climate change such as the manufacture of biofuels, lightweight high performance materials for transportation or enhanced housing insulation,” it added.

Cefic also expressed the need for international commitment to emissions reductions.

Europe cannot solve the global warming problem alone,” it said.
