TORONTO (ICIS news)--The American Petroleum Institute (API) on Friday said the BP Texas City, Texas refinery blast underscored safety concerns ahead of talks with regulators and Congress on the issue.
“The [BP accident] underscores that process safety management is a continuing improvement process and we acknowledge that improvements can be made,” API officials said at a media conference.
The comments were during a conference call ahead of the release next week of the US Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board’s (CSB) report on the 2005 accident at the BP Texas City, Texas, refinery which killed 15 workers, and ahead of upcoming congressional hearings on refinery safety.
API officials said it was early to comment on the amount of money that may need to be invested at US refineries to prevent other such incidents, nor were there specific proposals. The industry remained concerned however that Congress might use the BP incident to propose costly safety measures not justified by science.
