India’s IPCL unions call off strike, resume talks

SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Workers’ unions at Indian Petrochemicals Corp Ltd (IPCL) have called off a hunger strike after it resumed talks with the management, a source at one of the unions said on Thursday.

The management has agreed to hold off plans to relocate workers until both parties could agree on the relocation terms, he added.

The unions started a hunger strike on Tuesday to protest the company’s plan to relocate workers at the Vadodara complex to Jamnagar.

The relocation plan, originally to be implemented on 25 March, involved transferring 1,200 non-technical and unskilled workers from Vadodara to work on a three-year project at the Jamnagar complex.

IPCL’s parent Reliance Industries owns the Jamnagar complex, in the west of Gujarat state, while the Vadodara complex is located in the east of Gujarat.

IPCL could not be reached for comment.
