SAN ANTONIO, Texas (ICIS news)--Polymer maker Propilco will begin operating a new propylene splitter in Colombia in the third quarter of 2007, a company source said on Monday.

The splitter will have an initial capacity to make 150,000 tonnes/year of polymer grade propylene (PGP). It could be expanded in the future to have a capacity of 300,000 tonnes/year, the source said on the sidelines of the NPRA petrochemical conference.

The feedstock refinery grade propylene (RGP) will be supplied in part from Ecopetrol’s 78,000 bbl/day refinery in Cartagena, which is being expanded to 140,000 bbl/day by the end of 2009.

The propylene is currently used for home heating, the source said.

Propilco buys contract PGP from the US Gulf and the Profalca propylene splitter in northwest Venezuela.

The new splitter will likely ease PGP requirements from these suppliers, the source said.

Propilco is a member of a consortium called Compañía Promotora de Olefinas y Aromáticos del Caribe (Promotora), which is developing the Promotora petrochemicals complex in Colombia.
