NPRA '07: Academic claims Reach one-sided

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (ICIS news)--The EU’s chemical legislation Reach is biased against the industry, a controversial academic said on Monday.

 

Bjorn Lomborg said there had been no discussion to weigh up the cost to the industry against the benefits of the new regulations, which take effect later this year.

 

“It is about cost and benefit and that discussion has not taken place,” Lomborg told ICIS news at the NPRA’s 32nd International Petrochemicals Conference.

 

“There are always trade-offs – you cannot make these judgements if you only have one side of the story,” said the author of best-seller The Skeptical Environmentalist.

 

Lomborg, a professor at the Copenhagen Business School, said Reach had been potentially one-sided for the safety of the industry and in terms of lost jobs.

 

His book, published in 2001, suggested that predictions made by environmentalists were widely exaggerated.

 

He made similar claims during a presentation to the NPRA, arguing that the consequences of global warming were vastly over-stated.
