SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Solvay on Friday said that its joint venture, Solvin, may build a second polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC) latex in Thailand in response to growing global demand.

Solvin, a joint venture with BASF, was considering building a 10,000 tonne/year unit at Mab Ta Phut, Rayong province, the Belgian chemicals company said in a statement.

A decision was expected by the third quarter and construction work could start after that, it added.

Solvin currently serves PVDC latex clients out of its production unit in Tavaux, France.

Solvay owns 75% of the joint venture with BASF taking the remainder.

PVDC latex is a specialty barrier material used as coating in packaging applications in the food and pharmaceutical sectors.
