NEW DELHI (ICIS news)--India’s Grasim Industries Limited announced on Wednesday that it would develop value-added products downstream to its recently expanded chlor-alkali plant.

The company said it commissioned its chlor-alkali expansion project at Nagda in Madhya Pradesh state during the first quarter of 2007, but did not specify the start-up date.

The expansion has resulted in an increase in caustic soda capacity to 258,000 tonnes/year from 190,800 tonnes/year. It did not disclose the resulting increase in chlorine and hydrogen capacities.

“The focus would be on optimising resource utilisation and reducing cost through research and development and development of ancillary and value-added products,” Grasim said.

Grasim’s downstream products include hydrochloric acid, sulphuric acid, carbon disulphide, stable bleaching powder, chloro sulphuric acid and poly aluminium chloride.

The chlor-alkali plant supplies the majority of its caustic soda to the company’s viscose staple fibre (VSF) line at the same site and at two other locations. It sells the balance in the market.

It also supplies chlorine to Gwalior Chemical Industries Limited’s chemical complex at Nagda.
