SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Mitsubishi Chemical’s 280,000 tonne/year monoethylene glycol plant in Kashima, Japan, has reached full operating rates, a company source said on Wednesday.

It had reduced production in early April which ultimately resulted in a two-week shutdown.

“The Kashima plant was totally down, due to minor plant troubles, for half a month in April,” said the source, who added that “the plant restarted in the end of April.”

The “troubles” developed in early April, and production was curtailed by some 30-40% of nameplate capacity at that time, said a trader familiar with Mitsubishi Chemical.

Although the Mitsubishi source declined comment, it is understood that the largest MEG producer in Japan was in the market to buy spot cargoes in order to plug contractual shortfalls.

But a check with several of Mitsubishi’s customers in Asia showed that contract supplies had been timely so far, and with no cancellations.
