EC demands overhaul of Ukraine blast pipeline

PARIS (ICIS news)--The explosion on Monday in a gas pipeline that runs from Russia's western Siberia to Europe proved that parts of it should be renewed, the European Commission said on Tuesday.

The fact a similar blast had occurred in the same part of the Urengoi-Pamary-Uzhgorod pipeline in Ukraine in 2001 suggested parts of the network should be overhauled, EU energy spokesman Ferran Tarradellas said.

Tarradellas confirmed the explosion had been caused by a technical fault but added it had not led to the disruption of gas supplies to the EU.

Annually, Russia exports some 120 billion cubic metres (bcm) of gas, or 80% of total exports to Europe, through Ukraine, while about 20% of gas supplies are sent via Belarus.
