MUMBAI (ICIS news)--India’s Kanoria Chemicals & Industries (KCI) has started work on expanding its caustic soda capacity from 90,000 tonnes/year to 130,000 tonnes/year at its plant in Renukoot, Uttar Pradesh, a source close to the company said on Wednesday.

Uhde India will provide the knowhow for the project, which will use environmentally friendly membrane cell technology.

The source said the company had started negotiations with vendors and expected to commission the project by March 2008. Following the expansion, chlorine capacity would also rise from 79,200 tonnes/year to 114,400 tonnes/year at the plant, he added.

The additional volumes would include derivatives hydrochloric acid, poly aluminium chloride, aluminium chloride and bleaching powder plants, said the source.

The project would be part funded by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), which had invested $20m in the company and a loan from the State Bank of India, the source said.

Electricity for the chlor-alkali plant will be supplied by a 50 MW captive power plant.

According to the Alkali Manufacturer’s Association of India, KCL produces 3.9% of the country’s caustic soda output per annum.
