China finds melamine-tainted protein powder

SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--China’s quality control bureau has found melamine-tainted protein powder at two companies after a tip-off from its US counterpart.

 

Protein exports from Xuzhou Anying Biologic Technology and Binzhou Futian Biotechnology were found to contain melamine which could have caused pet deaths in the US, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said late on Tuesday.

 

The companies registered the exports under a different category and managed to escape tests at the customs.

 

Local police will investigate the companies further and will charge the people involved, the bureau said.

 

The bureau carried out further tests on another 173 companies, but did not find more melamine-tainted products.
