APIC ’07: Reliance to start up refinery mid-2008

TAIPEI (ICIS news)--Reliance Industries, the Indian petrochemicals major, expects to start up its new 27m tonne/year Jamnagar refinery by the middle of 2008, sources close to the company said on Wednesday.

Reliance’s new polypropylene (PP) facility at the same site will come onstream in April or May 2008, about 16 to 30 days before the refinery starts up, a source said.

The unit will add 1m tonnes/year to the company’s existing 1.7m tonne/year of PP output, another source said.

They were speaking to ICIS news ahead of the Asian Petrochemical Industry Conference (APIC) which starts here on Thursday.

Reliance said last month that it planned to complete the refinery in December 2008.

The cracker, and its downstream derivative units, is scheduled to come onstream in 2010-2011.

Meanwhile, industry sources estimate that PP demand in India will grow 10-15% over the next three to four years due to increased appetite for packaging from fast-growing sectors such as retail and automobile.

“Reliance will build capacities ahead of domestic demand,” one of the sources said.
