APIC '07: Nan Ya Plastics mulls TDI expansion

TAIPEI (ICIS news)--Taiwan’s sole toluene diisocyanate (TDI) producer, Nan Ya Plastics, is studying the feasibility of expanding its TDI capacity in Mailiao, a source close to the company said on Wednesday.

 

The feasibility study includes the assessment of feedstock availability and environmental compliance issues, the source said.

 

“Its existing TDI plant at Mailiao often runs into carbon dioxide (CO2) feedstock shortage. This problem has to be resolved before it can think of expanding TDI," he told ICIS news ahead of the Asian Petrochemicals Industry Conference (APIC) which starts on Thursday.

 

The producer currently receives CO2 from its sister company, Formosa Petrochemical Corporation (FPCC).

 

“Given all the suitable conditions, it could double its TDI capacity or build a new plant with an annual capacity of at least 10,000 tonnes,” he added.

 

Demand for TDI, a raw material for making polyurethanes used in various application sectors such as furniture and car seats, is forecast to increase markedly in Asia, particularly in China and India where annual growth is estimated at 10% and 17%, respectively, from 2007 to 2010.

 

Other key TDI producers in Asia include Japan’s Mitsui Chemicals Polyurethanes, and South Korea’s BASF Urethane Korea and Korea Fine Chemical.
